Nuremberg is the largest city in Franconia, the second-largest city in the German state of Bavaria, and its 544,414 (2023) inhabitants make it the 14th-largest city in Germany. Nuremberg Castle, the medieval old town and the city’s walls, with their many towers, are notable attractions.
Nuremberg was an important trade centre in the Middle Ages and the city and particularly Nuremberg Castle became one of the most frequent sites of the Imperial Diet of the Holy Roman Empire (after Regensburg and Frankfurt). Pogroms against Jews were a frequent feature of the cities medieval history. Because of Nuremberg’s Imperial history and its position in the centre of Germany, the Nazi Party chose the city to be the site of huge Nazi Party conventions: the Nuremberg rallies. This significance was part of the reasoning for holding the post-WWII War Crimes Trials in the city.
